“God is not looking for polished religious talk. He is looking for hearts turned toward Him.”
Matthew 21:23-32

In Matthew 21:23–32, Jesus tells the story of two sons who respond very differently to their father. One refuses at first but later changes his mind and goes to work. The other gives the respectful answer his father wants to hear but never follows through. Jesus uses the story to expose the difference between religious words and a life that actually responds to God.

The first son gives us hope because his first answer is not his final answer. Repentance means more than feeling sorry for what we have done. It means turning and moving in a new direction. God’s grace allows yesterday’s no to become today’s yes. Our past does not have to define the direction of our lives when we are willing to turn toward God.

The second son offers a needed warning. It is possible to know the language of faith, attend worship, pray, sing, and say all the right things while still resisting what God is asking us to do. Jesus calls us beyond good intentions into lives shaped by mercy, forgiveness, generosity, compassion, humility, and love. Obedience is where our yes to God becomes visible.

God is not asking us to pretend we have always gotten everything right. He is asking which direction we are moving now. Grace gives us room to turn, and obedience gives that turning a shape. Whatever our first answer has been, God continues to call us toward Him. We can still turn. We can still go. We can still say yes with our lives.
