James tells believers not to be satisfied with merely hearing God’s Word. Someone who hears but does not act is like a person who looks into a mirror and then immediately forgets what was seen. God’s Word is meant to shape the way His people actually live.
Devotional
Most of us have a long list of things we intend to do.
We mean to call the person who has been lonely. We mean to spend more time in prayer. We intend to deal with the relationship that has become strained. We plan to volunteer, give, encourage someone, or change the habit we already know is hurting us.
Intentions can feel surprisingly satisfying. Sometimes thinking seriously about doing something gives us enough of a sense of accomplishment that we never actually do it.
James will not let us stay there.
He says God’s Word is like a mirror. We look into it and see something true about ourselves. But seeing the truth does little good if we walk away unchanged.
That can happen in church more easily than we may want to admit. We hear a message about forgiveness and think it was exactly what someone else needed to hear. We read about generosity and agree with every word while making no change in our own giving. We hear Jesus tell us to love our neighbors and immediately begin thinking of the neighbors who make that command difficult.
The Word has shown us something, but we walk away from the mirror.
God did not give us Scripture merely so that we would become better informed. His Word forms us. It corrects, encourages, challenges, comforts, and calls us into a deeper life with Him.
We do not obey to earn God’s love. Grace comes first. We respond because we are already loved.
But grace does something to us.
At some point, listening becomes forgiving. Believing becomes serving. Compassion becomes showing up. Generosity becomes giving. Prayer becomes time actually spent with God.
We may not be able to do everything today.
But there is probably something we already know.
Start there.
Action
Think of one good intention you have repeated for several days or weeks. Take one practical step today that moves it from something you intend to do into something you have begun doing.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I do not want to hear Your Word, agree with it, and then walk away unchanged. Show me where good intentions have become a substitute for obedience. Give me wisdom to recognize what You are already asking of me and courage to act on what I know. Let Your Word take root in my choices, my relationships, my priorities, and my habits. In Your name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day
Faith grows when what I hear from God begins shaping what I actually do.
Good intentions can feel a lot like obedience until nothing actually changes. James reminds us that God’s Word is not only meant to be heard, studied, and admired. It is meant to take root in the way we live. Grace comes first, but grace also moves us forward, turning what we believe into forgiveness, service, generosity, compassion, and faithful action.
