Ephesians 2:19–22

Paul tells Gentile believers that through Christ they are no longer foreigners or strangers. They now belong to God’s household and are being built together, with Jesus Christ Himself as the cornerstone.

Devotional

Most of us know the uncomfortable feeling of walking into a place where everyone else seems to know how things work. They know the names, the routines, the inside jokes, and the expectations. We are the ones trying to figure out where to sit and whether we belong.

The Gentile Christians in Ephesus understood what it meant to stand outside. They had not grown up inside Israel’s covenant history. They did not share the same religious customs or background. Paul tells them that Christ has changed their status. They are no longer strangers.

That is beautiful language because belonging is one of our deepest needs. But Paul does not say belonging comes from becoming exactly like everyone else. He says they are being built together, and Christ is the cornerstone. The Church is healthiest when people are aligned with Jesus rather than forced into one personality, one background, or one way of doing everything.

That also means we should pay attention to the people who still feel like strangers among us. Churches can become so familiar to the people already inside that we forget how confusing they may feel to someone new. We say everyone is welcome, but real welcome takes more than an unlocked door.

Grace learns a name. Grace makes room. Grace explains what others already know. Grace notices the person standing alone.

Jesus does not build a private club. He builds a household, and He keeps making room for people we might not have thought to invite.

Action

Look for someone this week who may feel like an outsider. Introduce yourself, sit with them, invite them into conversation, or simply make it clear that you are glad they are there.

Prayer

Gracious God, thank You that Christ has brought me into Your household. Thank You that I am no longer a stranger to Your grace. Open my eyes to people who feel overlooked, uncertain, or out of place. Keep me from becoming so comfortable with familiar people and routines that I forget to welcome someone new. Build us together around Jesus Christ, our cornerstone, and make our churches places where belonging is more than something we talk about. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Jesus turns strangers into family and builds us together in grace.

It is one thing for a church to say everyone is welcome. It is another for someone new to actually feel it. “No Longer Strangers,” based on Ephesians 2:19–22, reflects on belonging in God’s household with Christ as our cornerstone.
