Luke 7:36–50 tells of a woman known as sinful who comes to Jesus while He is eating in a Pharisee’s home. She weeps at His feet, anoints Him, and receives mercy. Jesus contrasts her love and humility with Simon’s cold judgment, then declares her forgiven and sends her in peace.
Devotional: Not every table feels safe. Sometimes a table can become a place where people are measured, judged, and quietly dismissed. Simon the Pharisee invited Jesus to eat, but when a woman with a reputation entered the room, Simon’s heart revealed itself. He saw her label. Jesus saw her repentance.
Luke tells us she came with tears. She did not have polished words or a carefully prepared speech. She brought sorrow, love, humility, and costly devotion. She knelt where everyone could see her need, and that takes courage. Shame usually tells us to hide. Grace gives us enough hope to come close.
Simon thought Jesus should have pushed her away. In his mind, her presence proved something negative about her and perhaps about Jesus too. But Jesus turned the moment into a lesson about mercy. The one who knows she has been forgiven much loves much.
That does not mean some people need grace and others do not. Simon needed grace too. His need was just hidden under respectability. The woman’s sin was public. Simon’s judgment was private. Jesus saw them both clearly.
There is a warning here for all of us. We can be close to religious things and still miss the heart of God. We can invite Jesus to the table and still resent the mercy He shows someone else. We can know the language of faith and still forget that forgiveness is not something any of us deserves.
The woman leaves with peace because Jesus gives what judgment never can. He receives repentance. He forgives sin. He restores dignity. At His feet, tears are not wasted. They become part of a life touched by mercy.
Action: Ask God to show you where judgment may be crowding out mercy. Then pray for a heart that sees people through the grace of Christ.
Prayer: Merciful Jesus, thank You for receiving repentant hearts with compassion. Forgive me for the times I have judged others by their reputation while excusing my own hidden sins. Give me the humility to come to You honestly and the grace to see others with tenderness. Let my love grow from the forgiveness You have given me. Teach me to leave behind shame and walk in the peace only You can give. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Grace sees repentance where judgment only sees a label.
In Luke 7:36–50, a woman known by her sin enters a room where she is not welcome by everyone. Simon sees her reputation and quietly judges her. Jesus sees her repentance, her love, and her faith.
This story reminds us that respectable surroundings do not always mean merciful hearts. Simon was close to religious conversation, but the woman was close to grace. Jesus did not deny her need for forgiveness, but He did not shame her either. He received her, forgave her, restored her dignity, and sent her in peace.
That is the mercy of Christ. He sees us clearly, loves us truthfully, and gives peace where shame once spoke the loudest.
